How to Write an Abstract

A note on scientific writing of abstract, based on “起承转合”.

  1. Start (1–2 sentences)

    State the background, significance, and current status.
    e.g. The problem is severe/urgently needs investigation/… affects ….

  2. Connect (1–2 sentences)

    Introduce your research subject
    e.g. B plays an important role in the context of A.

  3. Turn (1 sentence for aim + several for methods and results)

    e.g. However, the role … (of B in A) remains unclear. To address this, we employed … (specific techniques/experiments) and found that … (certain results).

  4. Summarize (1–2 sentences)

    Our findings … (reveal phenomenon X of B in A), indicating function Y (theoretical and practical value) of B.
